National Volunteer Week Celebration

Auxiliary Bake SaleSaint Anthony's Health Center salutes its many volunteers during National Volunteer Week - April 27 to May 3.

Since 1942, individuals have been volunteering their energy and talents at Saint Anthony’s. Today’s volunteers have plenty of opportunities to serve the hospital as the hospital’s community services continue to grow. Leading the Auxiliary for the past 15 years is Volunteer Coordinator, Cherie Schmidt.

“I am very proud of our 175 volunteers because they make a difference in the Health Center and in the community,” said Schmidt. “Our volunteers assist patients, families and friends in many ways. They also support the medical professionals who provide patient care and they offer a welcoming voice, friendly face and helping hand to those who visit Saint Anthony’s Hospital and Saint Clare’s Hospital. In 2007, our volunteers worked over 17,000 hours.”

Volunteers at Saint Anthony's Health Center can work in various areas throughout the hospitals, including the Saint Anthony’s Gift Shop, which is operated by volunteers. Volunteers are also involved in fundraising for numerous activities and contribute financial assistance to many hospital projects. Volunteers are on hand to greet visitors and supply them with hospital information and directions as well.

In the surgery waiting room, volunteers receive messages form surgery and nursing unit staff regarding patients and the relay the messages to the family. The Volunteer Escorts assist by escorting new patients to their rooms, explaining hospital services available to the patient and introduces patients to charge nurses. Volunteers also assist in various departments with office support and with community events.

“The volunteers as not just beneficial to those they help,” says Schmidt. “Volunteering is also good for the individual doing the work. Volunteers feel needed and have a new sense of self worth while volunteering.”

The Institute of Volunteering Research found that volunteering will help maintain a sense of purpose, particularly those who have retired from paid work because it gives another social network. Volunteers have the opportunity to meet new people and establish friendships.

“We are looking for volunteers who enjoy helping others,” said Cherie. “Volunteers are needed seven days a week. Regardless if you are retired or working part-time or caring for your family, we can work with a person’s schedule and give them the opportunity to volunteer.”
