Saint Anthony’s Joint Replacement Center is focused on providing complete care for hip, knee and shoulder replacements – from pre-operation education to surgery to post-operation education to pain management.
The Joint Replacement Center is the result of a cooperative effort between local orthopedic surgeons, nursing staff, physical and occupational therapy, and social work staff to create a unique and special environment for patients and their families.
Mary Rose Fisher of Godfrey had a total knee replacement earlier this year because she was having trouble with her everyday activity, including just taking a walk.
“I noticed that my knee was swollen after I would take a walk,” said Mary Rose. “It was to the point that it was even difficult to go up a small curb. Now I am walking up to three miles. I had excellent therapy through Saint Anthony’s Home Health Care and in their outpatient physical therapy department.”

Saint Anthony's Joint Replacement Center has specially trained nurses and therapists who work with each physician to provide comprehensive care for patients undergoing procedures. With a goal to have individuals back to their normal, everyday lives, the Center provides education, information and therapy to help in the recovery process.
“I can feel my knee getting better everyday,” said Mary Rose. “Everyone has been very helpful and Dr. Shepperson did a great job with the entire process. My incision looks great. I look forward to being 100 percent very soon.”
The Joint Replacement Center is keeping current with the newest technology in minimally invasive joint replacement, including the use of the Jackson Spinal Surgery and Imaging Table that allows for the orthopedic surgeons to use x-rays during surgery for exact positioning, and the Lecia F40 microscope. They are also using education both before and after the surgery to ensure total success.
“Before the surgery patients are taught how to do the exercises that will be needed after surgery, tips for pain management, blood clot prevention and general information,” said Anessa Emmons, Director of the Joint Replacement Center. “During the actual surgery, our surgeons are using minimally invasive techniques that decrease pain and allow for faster recovery time. We are also seeing improved anesthesia techniques that help prevent post-op nausea. After the surgery, patients and their families are given even more specific and in-depth education so that they are able to heal to the best of their ability.”
