Saint Anthony’s Health Center is continuing its efforts in cancer treatment in 2010 with James Piephoff, M.D., Radiation Oncologist, and with the addition of Erin Hazen, R.N., as Nurse Navigator.
As the first health care facility in the area to have a Nurse Navigator, Erin will assist women through the process of breast screening, diagnostic treatment and therapeutic treatments. She joins the Saint Anthony’s team of multidisciplinary breast specialists that includes Radiologist, Surgeons, Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Pathologists, Certified Mammographers, Ultrasound and MRI Technologists.
In her role as Nurse Navigator, Erin serves as the coordinator between the patient and physician, with her work beginning when there is an abnormal diagnostic mammogram with a recommendation for a biopsy. A breast biopsy is performed to remove cells, either surgically or through a less invasive procedure involving a hollow needle, from a suspicious area in the breast and examine them under a microscope to determine a diagnosis.
To enhance the process, Saint Anthony’s recently purchased an ultrasound guided breast biopsy machine. With the help of image guidance, physicians can remove samples of breast tissue through a single, small skin incision. During the entire phase of care, Erin will be with the patient to support both their physical and emotional needs.
“I am here to help each patient by providing resources, education and over-all support,” said Erin. “I will be able to talk the patients through every step of the process to ensure that they fully understand what is going on and to make sure that they have all the emotional support needed.”
Dr. Piephoff will be continuing his work in the Saint Anthony’s Cancer Center of Excellence was well as in the community. Screenings, education for the public and ongoing support for those diagnosed with cancer continue to be an integral part of the Saint Anthony’s Cancer Center of Excellence, focusing on the idea of the power of knowledge and early detection.
“Saint Anthony’s Cancer Center of Excellence offers top-notch service and quality care comparable to larger hospitals in the area,” said Dr. Piephoff. “Along with the excellent medical oncologists, Saint Anthony’s also provides state-of-the-art care for the vast majority of local patients. We’re more accessible and patients will always see a familiar face and can be comfortable that they are getting the best care available.”
