Exercise is the best anti-diabetic, anti-cholesterol and anti-hypertensive on the market!
It’s no secret that most adults don’t exercise nearly enough. A recent survey made news headlines when findings indicated that individuals with diabetes or those at risk of diabetes may do even less exercise than average.
Jacqueline Fairchild, M.D., Internal Medicine, agrees that while the report may be disheartening, it is consistent with findings about the health habits of the general population that need to be reversed.
“Most people, no matter what their health issues are, don’t exercise regularly and consistently,” she said.
Exercise is especially important for those with diabetes and the American Diabetes Association recommends exercise most days of the week and a healthy low fat diet for those already diagnosed or those at risk.
“Clearly, those with diabetes will reap enormous benefit from exercising. Exercise is the best anti-diabetic, anti-cholesterol and anti-hypertensive on the market! It is also the best weight loss “drug” available to us. Every metabolic problem that results from obesity and Type 2 diabetes is improved with daily exercise,” Dr. Fairchild said.
The combination of daily exercise, a healthy diet and even moderate weight loss can reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes significantly.
“Knowledge is only power when we put it into motion. It’s ultimately the individual’s responsibility to get off the couch and get moving - one step at a time,” she said.
