Misty and Michael Farmer arrived at Saint Anthony’s Health Center with a familiar feeling. This was the sixth time they had been to the hospital in the last 13 years to deliver a baby. At 12:12 p.m. on April 28, 2008, Kyle Farmer joined his five older siblings.

Because Kyle was in a breech position, Misty’s obstetrician, Catherine Wikoff, M.D., planned for a C-section. Due to complications during delivery, Kyle was air-lifted to Children’s Hospital. Misty’s complications, even more severe than her son’s, required 11 units of blood, 4 units of plasma and 2 units of platelets. “I cannot say enough about how wonderful Saint Anthony’s has been,” said Misty. “The doctors saved my life. I would not have made it had it not been for the doctors, nurses and the entire staff. While I was leaving the ICU, the entire staff lined up to the elevator, cheering for me and calling me the Miracle Mama.”
Several departments had a hand in Misty’s care – from the Women’s Pavilion to ICU to Laboratory Services. “Saint Anthony’s responded immediately,” said Vance Hatcher, Director of Laboratory Services at Saint Anthony’s. “Early in the emergency, we contacted our blood supplier, the Central Illinois Community Blood Center, and they also responded immediately to the situation. Essentially, her life was saved by 17 donors; 17 different strangers came together to save her life through their donations.”
Just two days later, Michael drove to Children’s Hospital to pick up baby Kyle and brought him to meet the rest of his family. Misty is now enjoying the peace of mind in having her entire family with her, happy and healthy. Misty’s mother, Margie Kincade – a former nurse, was by her daughter’s side throughout the entire process.
“I told the doctor that was my daughter in her hands and I wanted her to be okay,” said Margie. “And that is exactly what she did. I have no doubt in my mind that if it would not have been for this certain group of people helping our family, things would have turned out differently.”
“We were very excited and emotional when Misty was united with Baby Kyle after his brief stay at Children’s,” said Julie Ashlock, RNC, BSN, Manager of Saint Anthony’s Women’s Pavilion. “The Farmer’s have a beautiful family and we have come to know them over the years as their family grew. We are grateful that we as an OB team could be there for Misty and Kyle when complications arose. There was tremendous teamwork. We all prayed for God to look after them and guide us through everything and He did”.
