Caring for Our Aging Population

Loading...

In the past two decades, the older population has grown more than twice as fast as the rest of the population. That growth has resulted in more and more people caring for a spouse, parent or loved one who is experiencing loss of independence due to aging.

If you or someone you know is the caregiver for an aging person, you understand the challenges -- striving to meet their needs, yet having less time to accomplish your own daily tasks. And you may not feel comfortable leaving your loved one alone while you work or run errands outside the home. Yet, there is a way you can continue to provide care for your loved one, while offering yourself time away. Adult Day Services provides direct care and medical supervision as well as structured daily activities, therapies, and social interaction.

Staff members include nurses, an activity coordinator, program manager, and other professionals who provide personal attention, promote social, physical, and emotional well-being, and offer other alternatives to institutional care. Adult Day Services has a medical advisor, who along with staff members, develop a special care plan for each participant -- following any recommendations from the individual's personal physician. The program also provides daily health monitoring by a staff nurse. Blood pressures, weight and a general overall description of each individual's health are entered into their record, and any change is reported to the participant's families and physicians.
