Seniors Enjoy Independent Living at Saint Clare's Villa

Villa Marge playing cardsResident, Marge Hughes, enjoys a card game with friends she has made at Saint Clare's Villa.
Saint Clare's Villa is home to many seniors who still enjoy living independently.

For many people, the thought of getting older and not having the freedom to live their own life is devastating. The idea of not being in your own home just because you need a little extra help is unbearable. Luckily for area residents there is a way to combine the comfort and familiarity of your own home with a trained staff to help with special needs.

Opening its doors over six years ago, Saint Clare’s Villa has 64 units to offer a beautiful residential setting overlooking the Mississippi River. Saint Clare’s Villa offers independence for its residents while still in a supported living environment. The residents have numerous activities and social gatherings to participate in. Living in the Saint Clare’s Villa allows the residents to live in their own apartments in a community of their peers with some extra help from the staff at the Saint Clare’s Villa.

The qualified staff offers assistance with bathing, meal service and activities of daily living, if needed. Medication management may be used to ensure all medications are taken properly. Each resident and their families work with the Saint Clare’s Villa staff to personalize the best supported living plan.

“Saint Clare’s Villa is for those people who can still live on their own,” said Shannon Fraley, Marketing and Admissions Coordinator. “We simply provide them with the extra help that is sometimes needed. Our goal is to keep the residents as independent as possible for as long as possible.”

Part of the independence is the freedom that each resident is given in their own studio or one-bed room apartment. The apartments have all the amenities of home and allow the residents to make it their own. One resident, Marge Hughes, has been living in the Saint Clare’s Villa for over a year and is still satisfied with her new home.

“I love my apartment,” said Marge. “I am able to have all of my own things with me. I have all the space I need and can relax in private when needed. The only thing that I really can’t do anymore is cooking and laundry, so they do it for me, but I can still do all the other things I want.”

Marge often participates in the many activities offered at the Saint Clare’s Villa. Residents have the opportunity to go to exercise classes, play bingo and cards and other games, watch movies, have social hours and take off-site trips to go shopping and to the library.

“There is always something to do,” said Marge. “I have met some great friends here and we like to play cards or just get together. I also play the piano once a month in the Alzheimer’s Unit of the hospital. This month, I was able to write something for the Villa newsletter.”

Saint Clare’s Villa residents also have the freedom to leave the apartments when they wish, with the staff always knowing when they leave and return.

“I like to spend some weekends with my family,” said Marge. “I sign out and I go for a few days. I have the freedom to leave when I want to, but I feel a sense of security when I sign in and out. I know that they care about me and where I am going.”

Another step to ensure safety among the residents is the use of the Life-Line system. Each resident wears a necklace that can be activated at any time. When the button on the necklace is pushed, a page is sent to a staff member with the apartment number and residents name.

“The Life-Line system is a great way to for the residents to always have access to a staff member,” said Fraley. “It also brings a sense of relief to the family members of the residents. They know that their loved ones are being taken care of. The Life-Line can be used in non-emergency situations as well. If a resident is having trouble with anything and needs a little extra help, they can call us.”

Saint Clare’s Villa currently has openings. Any one interested in learning more information may request an information packet or a tour of the apartments and facilities and meet with a staff member to discuss financial assistance and payment options.
